Pastor’s Greeting

SUMMER!  The time for gathering.  A time for families to unite after a long winter’s absence.  It’s a time to rejoice, reconnect and take great pleasure in being a part of the greater whole.  Whether that be the family, friends or your church community.

The Church of Spiritual Life, maintains our schedule, unlike many Spiritualist churches that close for the summer months.  They continue with the traditional fashion of closing to attend a camp for the summer.  Today, many of us no longer have that luxury during the warm weather.  We can however, visit for the day or weekend.  We encourage you to pay one of the area camps a visit.

There are many different Spiritual camps that you might want to consider visiting this summer.  Of course, we have Lily Dale, our home headquarters, in New York.  Closer to home, you’ll find Temple Heights, Camp Etna and Madison Spiritualist Camp, all in the State of Maine.

In Massachusetts, the On-I-Set WigWam Spiritualist Camp in Onset Massachusetts, is always a favorite.  In Connecticut, Pine Grove Spiritualist Camp has classes and services to attend.

No matter where you go, you’ll find like-minded individuals, with perhaps a new idea or two that you might want to share with us upon your return.

We’ll be here, holding normal services and classes throughout the summer.  We encourage you to take advantage of some of the very talented teachers and Spiritualist servers that will pass through our doors this season.  We welcome the area members of our sister churches that close, to pay us a visit, this enriches us all.

We look forward to seeing you.

Member Spotlight

Probably most people were born with a spiritual connection.  Some of us are lucky enough to have become aware of it at an early age.  For Rene LaMontagne, his spiritual unfolding began at five.  At 25, he had a Near-Death experience that propelled him on his development journey.

Rene LaMontagne

He and his mother studied with Reverend Josie Marcello while growing up, and with The Reverend Dorothy Comish 2/times a week as well as weekly circles.

Almost 30 years ago he connected with Reverend Henderson, and joined our church.

Rene says, joining a Spiritualist church is like sitting down to meat & potatoes…but if you want the seasonings, sauces and desserts, you need to dive into classes, workshops and demonstrations like he did.  He was hungry and he made sure his plate stayed full.

Rene partnered with his mentor Reverend Ken Wingood in serving churches all over New England, and still serves as healer, speaker and medium in our services.

Rene’s background in mental health, alcohol and drug abuse counseling, helps him with his Spirit and human connections, and his generous love and warmth, and sense of humor that sometimes takes a ‘serious left” make him a huge asset to our community.

Britt and Emma Chronicles

Summer Has Begun!

It is a particularly humid summer. Britt laid out his Church wardrobe Saturday night: he knew it would be hot, so he got his Hawaiian shirt, khaki shorts and favorite flip-flops ready. Emma decided she’d also wear her flip-flops, with her favorite skirt and blouse. Sunday morning, Britt and Emma head to Church dressed in all their summer finery.

During the Healing Service, EVERYONE can hear Britt’s intrusive flip-flops as he walks to his Healing Chair. Britt’s shorts show off his blindingly pale legs. Before the Pastor can alert Britt to this problem, Emma gets up and flip-flops to Britt’s chair. Along the way, Britt and Emma exchange looks. They begin to feel self-conscious about the sound of their sandals.

Emma sits down and Britt offers her healing energy. After Britt dismisses her, Emma gets up and hurries back to her chair – but her flip-flops slap LOUDLY on the way. Britt gets nervous and starts to sweat.

Another congregant, wearing an off-the-shoulder sundress, sits at Britt’s Healing Chair. Britt gently places his hands on the woman’s bare shoulders without thinking about it. The woman squirms uncomfortably – Britt’s sweaty palms do not feel good against her bare shoulders. The Pastor quietly gets Britt’s attention and motions for him to do a hands-off healing. The woman receiving the healing immediately feels better.

After the service, the Pastor asks Britt and Emma if they are okay with wearing shoes or strapped sandals to service in the future. They readily agree because they didn’t like bringing attention to themselves with the sound of their slapping flip-flops. Britt also noted that touching the bare skin of any congregant felt inappropriate to him, so he promised not to do that anymore either. Emma was as happy to hear that as was the Pastor.
